Start with the Winners!    Its past, present and future time

Every place has a story to tell.

Start with the Winners! had its beginnings in 1987 at the annual International Reading Association conference.  The guest speaker spoke of the important role instructional materials used for teaching reading skills play in motivating young readers to read the whole book from which the selections used in those materials are excerpted.  An attendee sitting nearby grumbled..."not possible...no instructional materials available for whole books!"

Many years passed but the words “not possible” didn’t.  Having worked in product development for many years for basal reading series, the idea of a product to meet this need seemed possible but unlikely...at least until the onset of the Internet.  Winners! Bookshelf LLC was formed with the mission of taking this "comment" to a product concept level surfaced when developing “products” no longer meant you had to manufacture, warehouse, and ship.  Downloads and pdfs were the buzz words as web designers and curriculum developers rushed to take center stage in the online instructional resources business.  In 1997, literatureplace.com joined the crowd with the start of the Bookfolio Series, a  literature-based resource including activity and reading guides for 150 titles written by educators...75 of the 150 title selected had won at least one book award and within a year all the remaining titles also won book awards.  This sudden increase in both institution awards and young readers' choice awards created the need for a some way to feature award-winning books.  Thus began research into the book awards and the need to design a product that take this research in the institution awards as well as the young readers' choice award programs available to the public including both home and school...naming the new database product Winners! Bookshelf designed to bring the award-winning books to young readers in every home and every classroom.

Winners! Bookshelf has grown in both purpose and usage to include all the award Winners! representing 43 Institution Awards and with new awards programs coming online each year.  Concurrently the Young Readers' Choice Awards spread across country with 48 states participating to now include 85 Young Readers’ Choice Awards with the expectation that new awards will be added to states that may eventually expand their coverage to include K-12 grade levels.  With such widespread popularity for book awards programs, it was time to add to a "resource" driven product generated by our database...a-ready-to-use "product/resource" designed to meet specific needs.  Winners! Bookfinder, with its database of over 5,000 award-winning titles, designed to serve as the search engine to create the best selection of award-winning titles and made available for our young readers.  Winners! Bookfinder was designed to provide a variety of search options to enable the user to create a customized booklist based on genres and the authors, illustrators who created the Winners!  A click on any book title will produce basically the same results...a Bookview featuring the cumulative award history of the title plus more!

At literatureplace.com we start posting new book award winners each January with the Newbery Award and the Caldecott Award Winners!…and many more award Winners! that are announced in January.   The Winners! that accumulate throughout the year are included in the current year's winners" updates that are appear on each list by year.  The story of Start with the Winners! continues with the adddition of new features each year as the technology of the Internet continues to grow stirring the imagination to keep pace with progress!
